There’s no getting away from the fact that photographing weddings is one of the most challenging tasks a photographer can undertake. Weddings present the ultimate challenge: to combine all the different facets of photography into one day, often all at one time. Add to this the overhanging pressure that there is only one chance to get it right...there's no going back and doing it tomorrow!
We believe, and we will always believe, that there is so much more to wedding photography than just nice equipment. As photographers our job is 90% people, 10% photography. Our understanding of the dynamics of a wedding day and our ability to interact with the bridal party and the guests is the key to creating the natural emotive images our couples love. However, that is not to say we shouldn't have the best wedding photography equipment possible to help us achieve our vision!
As wedding photographers, we are constantly adapting to the changing environments we face throughout the day. From dimly lit hotel rooms, to bright harshly lit outdoor wedding ceremonies. At the wedding reception we often have to contend with very low levels of light, paired with bright neon disco lighting and wedding guests moving around quickly as they dance and celebrate the night away. To tackle the wide variations of lighting conditions we use the most current and high-performing wedding photography camera bodies to date, the Canon 5D Mark IV paired with a wide variety of Canon's professional range of L-series lenses.
Our all-round workhorse lens is the 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom lens, which enables us to take awesome wedding photos whether we need to get right up close to our subjects or zoom in from a distance. When we are in particularly tight and up close situations, we use our super wide 16-35mm f/2.8 zoom lens, which allows us to capture as much as possible in the frame, even when we are surrounded by people or in tight spaces where we can’t easily position ourselves.
When it comes to shooting the finer details of the wedding, such as macro details of the wedding rings, jewellery, perfume, wedding dresses and shoes, we use our 100mm macro lens.
Along side our zoom lenses we also have a variety of prime lenses including the 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.2 & 85mm f/1.2. We particularly love using the 85mm f/1.2 for creating stunning romantic couple portraits. These lenses are also amazing in low light conditions, such as in a dark ceremony or during the evening on the dance floor. The low aperture on these lenses really let in as much light as possible allowing us to continue capturing great images even once the lights go out.
Our absolute favourite lens for shooting weddings is our 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens, which we love using to crop in really tightly and to eliminate objects that are not crucial to the scene. This is a great lens to get up close to the bride and groom when they are saying their wedding vows, for example, or for other intimate moments where, as a photographer, you don’t want to be obtrusive or interfere with the moment.
